Carey stakes his claim in Bristol City's five-star show

Louis Carey continued his comeback at Ashton Gate and staked a strong claim to line up against Crystal Palace in Saturday's Coca-Cola Championship clash at Selhurst Park.

Making only his second appearance in six weeks, City's captain showed no sign of the chronic toe injury which has so disrupted his season.

The centre-back proved his fitness and helped City's second string chalk up a convincing victory over West rivals Argyle in a one-sided Totesport.com Combination Cup fixture.

The 32-year-old Bristolian contributed mightily to a clean sheet and delivered a performance which must have impressed watching manager Gary Johnson.

There were also notable contributions from scorers Ivan Sproule, John Akinde, Cole Skuse and Nicky Maynard, all of whom are pushing for first-team recalls.

Substitute Joe Edwards, who replaced James Wilson in the 21st minute when the defender left the field as a precaution after suffering a bruised ankle, completed the rout in the final minute, firing in from an acute angle.

Another City substitute to see action was Jennison Myrie-Williams, who has returned from his loan spell at Carlisle United.
